1. What vehicles can be driven with an A3 driver's license?
According to Article 3 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the types of vehicles that can be operated by holders of an A3 driver's license include:
- Three-wheeled motorcycles, motorcycles defined for A1 driver's license, and similar vehicles.
According to this regulation, an A3 driver's license allows you to operate the following vehicles:
- Two-wheeled motorcycles with an engine displacement between 50 cm3 and below 175 cm3.
- Three-wheeled motorcycles for disabled individuals.
- Three-wheeled motorcycles.
An A3 driver's license is commonly used in situations where a three-wheeled vehicle is used to transport goods when moving houses, delivering bulky products to distributors, stores, etc.
Note: An A3 driver's license can be used to drive regular motorcycles, but not motorcycles with an engine displacement of 175cc and above.
2. What are the requirements for taking the A3 driver's license test?
According to Article 8 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, individuals who want to take the A3 driver's license test do not need to study theory at a driving training center. They can self-study at home and then register for the practical exam.
Based on Article 7 of Circular 12, individuals taking the A3 driver's license test must be Vietnamese citizens or foreigners who are allowed to reside, work, or study in Vietnam and meet all the requirements regarding age, health, and education level.
- Age requirement: At least 18 years old (according to point b, clause 1, Article 60 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law).
- Health requirements: Meet the health standards specified in Appendix 01 issued together with Joint Circular 24/2015/TTLT-BYT-BGTVT.
- Education level requirement: No education level requirement.

3. What documents are required for the A3 driver's license test?
According to Article 19 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the documents required for the A3 driver's license test include:
- Application form for driver's license training and examination according to the prescribed template.
- Copy of personal identification documents:
Vietnamese citizens: Copy of ID card or citizen identification card or valid passport.
Vietnamese residing abroad: Valid passport.
Foreigners: Copy of valid passport with a validity period of over 6 months and temporary residence card/permanent residence card or diplomatic/official identity card.
- Health certificate issued by an authorized medical facility.
The test candidates must submit the above-mentioned documents to the training and examination center for them to create a list of test candidates and send it to the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam or the Department of Transport.
4. How much does the A3 driver's license test cost?
According to Circular 188/2016/TT-BTC, individuals taking the A3 driver's license test are required to pay the following fees:
- A3 theory test fee: 40,000 VND per attempt.
- A3 practical test fee: 50,000 VND per attempt.
- A3 driver's license issuance fee: 135,000 VND per issuance.
In addition, individuals who want to take the A3 driver's license test may incur additional fees such as health examination fee, photo ID fee, document preparation fee at the examination center, practice test fee, etc.
Therefore, the total cost of the A3 driver's license test can range from a few hundred thousand to over 1 million VND.
5. How long does it take to get the A3 driver's license after the test?
According to Article 27, Clause 1 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, amended by Circular 38/2019/TT-BGTVT, candidates who pass the theory and practical tests will be recognized as successful.
The time for issuing the driver's license after passing the test is specified in Clause 3, Article 35 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT as follows:
3. The driver's license must be issued within a maximum of 10 working days from the end of the examination period.
Therefore, after completing the A3 driver's license test, candidates only need to wait for 10 working days to receive the A3 driver's license.
In the case of requesting home delivery of the A3 driver's license, after completing the test, candidates must register for the home delivery service through the online public service system to submit a request to the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam or the Department of Transport.
According to Clause 1, Article 17 of Circular 12, the issued A3 driver's license will be valid indefinitely.
