1. What can you drive with a B1 license?
According to the regulations in Article 16 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the B1 driver's license (or B1 license for short) is divided into two types: B1 automatic and B1. With these driver's licenses, drivers can operate the following types of vehicles:
* B1 automatic license allows driving the following types of vehicles:
- Automatic passenger cars with up to 9 seats, including the driver's seat.
- Trucks, including automatic trucks with a design weight below 3,500 kg.
- Vehicles for people with disabilities.
* B1 license allows driving the following types of vehicles:

2. Registering for B1 driver's license training
2.1. What are the conditions for obtaining a B1 driver's license?
In addition to the question "What can you drive with a B1 license?", people are also curious about the conditions for obtaining a B1 driver's license. According to Article 7 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the conditions for obtaining a B1 license are as follows:
- Regarding the applicant: Vietnamese citizens, foreigners residing or working, studying in Vietnam.
- Regarding age: At least 18 years old (counted on the date of the driving test).
- Regarding health: Not having any diseases listed in Appendix 1 issued with Inter-Ministerial Circular 24/2015/TTLT-BYT-BGTVT.
- Regarding educational level: No educational requirements.

2.2. What documents are required to register for B1 driving license?
According to Article 9, Clause 1 of Circular 12/2017, the application for B1 driving license should include the following documents:
- Application form for driving and examination license.
- Copy of identity card or citizen identification card or valid passport (for Vietnamese citizens) or valid passport (for Vietnamese citizens residing abroad).
- Copy of valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining) and temporary residence card or permanent residence card or diplomatic identity card or official identity card (for foreigners).
- Health certificate issued by an authorized medical facility.
2.3. How long does it take to obtain a B1 driving license?
According to Article 13, Clause 1a of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the training duration at driving training centers for B1 driving license is as follows:
- Automatic transmission vehicles: 476 hours (theory: 136, practical driving: 340).
- Manual transmission vehicles: 556 hours (theory: 136, practical driving: 420).
2.4. How much does it cost to get a B1 driving license?
According to Article 2, Clause 4 of Circular 72/2011/TTLT-BTC-BGTVT, the tuition fee for B1 driving license is determined by the driving training center. Therefore, the fee may vary depending on the facilities and instructors of each driving school.
Generally, the tuition fee for B1 driving license ranges from around 6 to 8 million VND (excluding examination fees).
3. What is the process for the B1 driving exam?
According to Article 21 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, the B1 driving exam process is conducted as follows:
Step 1: Theory exam.
The theory exam consists of questions related to road traffic regulations, driving techniques, as well as vehicle structure and common repairs, and driver ethics.
The theory exam lasts for 20 minutes and includes a total of 30 questions. In the B1 and B2 theory exams, there are no failing questions. Candidates who answer correctly at least 28 out of 30 questions are considered to have passed the theory exam and proceed to the simulation software exam.
Step 2: Driving simulation exam.
The exam participants must handle simulated traffic situations on a computer. Each exam includes 10 situations taken from a pool of 120 simulation questions.
In this exam, candidates need to score at least 35 out of 50 points to pass and proceed to the practical driving exam.
Step 3: Practical driving exam.
The exam participants must perform the correct sequence and control the vehicle through predetermined exam tasks:
Task 1: Starting.
Task 2: Stopping to yield to pedestrians.
Task 3: Stopping and starting on an incline.
Task 4: Driving over a track and perpendicular road.
Task 5: Passing through an intersection with traffic lights.
Task 6: Driving through a winding road.
Task 7: Parallel parking.
Task 8: Temporary stopping at a railway crossing.
Task 9: Shifting gears on the road.
Task 10: Parallel parking (both parallel and perpendicular).
Task 11: Conclusion.
The vehicle used for the practical driving exam is a 4-seat car equipped with a sensor chip for scoring. The total score for this exam is 100 points, and candidates must achieve at least 80 out of 100 points to pass and proceed to the on-road practice.
Step 4: On-road driving practice.
The exam participants operate the vehicle for the driving exam, handle traffic situations on the road, and follow the instructions of the examiner. In this part of the exam, the examiner sits in the car with the candidate and scores their performance.
The total score for this part is also 100, and candidates must achieve at least 80 out of 100 points to be recognized as passing and be granted the B1 license."
