1. Regulations for renewing an expired driver's license:
If your driver's license has expired for less than 3 months, the regulations stated in Article 52, Decree No. 46/2012/TT-BGTVT will apply: 'Individuals whose driver's licenses have expired for less than 3 months, counting from the expiration date, can have their driver's licenses renewed if the license is damaged.'
In other words, when you reach the expiration date of your car driver's license (within 3 months), you can renew your driver's license without having to take the theory and practical exams.
2. Procedure for renewing an expired car driver's license:
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Transport, all types of B2, C, D, E driver's licenses have a specific validity period. After the license expires, if you wish to continue driving, you must go through the procedure to renew your driver's license.
The required documents include:
- 1 photocopy of your identification card (passport photocopies do not require notarization)
- 1 photocopy of the expiring driver's license.
- Original documents (for those whose driver's licenses were issued by the Department of Transport in provinces and cities).

4. Time to receive the driver's license:

- For driver's licenses issued by other provincial Departments of Transport, the processing time for a new driver's license is 20 days from the date of issuance.
- For cases where the driver's license has expired between 3 months and 1 year, a theory exam is required as per the regulations.
