Trước tiên, theo quy định của pháp luật về lý lịch tư pháp thì phiếu lý lịch tư pháp được định nghĩa là phiếu do cơ quan quản lý cơ sở dữ liệu lý lịch tư pháp cấp cho cá nhân để xác định người đó có án tích hay không, liệu họ có bị cấm đảm nhiệm  chức vụ, quản lý doanh nghiệp theo quy định của pháp luật hay không.

Định nghĩa của lý lịch tư pháp và một số thông tin cơ bản về lý lịch tư pháp được tạm dịch sang tiếng Anh như sau:

Criminal records is information about a criminal record of a person convicted by a legally effective judgment or judgment which records the individual’s execution status as well as about having a criminal record. be allowed to hold positions, establish businesses, cooperatives or not.

Criminal records will be issued by the Department of Justice and the National Justice Center. Judicial records are granted to requesters according to form No. 1 and form No. 2 according to demand.

Criminal records cards are issued to individuals, legal proceedings or socio-political organizations to serve the needs of applying for jobs, going abroad, managing personnel as well as serving legal activities.

Criminal records are also issued to foreigners residing in Vietnam.
