1. Documents to prepare
- Vietnamese driver's license (original)
- Vietnamese national ID card or citizen ID card (copy)
- Passport (original with copy)
- Foreign resident card (original with copy)
- Confirmation of residence address in Japan - 住民票 (2 copies)
- Passport-sized photos (2)
- Translation of driver's license into Japanese (Embassy, Japan Automobile Federation JAF)
2. Procedures for applying for a license in Japan
2.1 Translating your driver's license from Vietnamese to Japanese
This is the first thing you need to do. There are two ways to translate your license:
Contact the Embassy.
Contact the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).
*Both methods require a fee.
2.2 Go to the local driving test center to apply for a license conversion
After preparing all the necessary documents and the translated license, search for the local driving test center in the area where you live by entering the province name + "運転免許センター" in the search keywords.
For example, "埼玉県運転免許センター" for Saitama province.

3. Theory exam
There are 10 questions for the theory exam. It is a multiple-choice format, and you can choose to take it in Vietnamese or English. The theory exam is quite simple, and the result is announced immediately after the exam. You only need to answer at least 8 questions correctly to pass this round. Congratulations to those who applied for a 50cc license, as you can obtain the license right away. For those who applied for a 125cc license, continue to step 4, the practical exam.
4. Practical exam (applies to those applying for a 125cc license).
After passing the theory exam, the center will schedule your practical exam. If you pass the theory exam in the morning, you will usually take the practical exam in the afternoon.
In reality, the practical exam at the test center is more challenging compared to the practical exam you took while studying and obtaining your license in Japan.
Although many people have obtained their license in their first attempt, if you fail, don't be too sad and take it as an experience for the next attempt. The examiners at the test center pay close attention to your attitude towards traffic regulations and road signs that you encounter. Therefore, pay attention to these aspects to pass the exam.
You will need to pay the exam fee on the day of the exam. The fee for the first attempt is 1500 yen, and from the second attempt onwards, it is 4000 yen per exam.
*For those applying for a 50cc license, after passing the theory exam, you will receive the license directly without the need for a practical exam. After passing the theory exam, you will have a 1-2 hour driving practice session.
